Believe it or not we didn't always have computers and Netflix to spend our leizure hours. Crafts and art projects are still a great way to spend your time and create something meaningful. Below we have some fun insights into the colorful history of cross stitch projects, patterns, and more. Enjoy!
Cross stitch dates back to 6th century BC. Most believe it started in China during the Tang Dynasty and then spread west. In many cultures, a woman’s worth was tied to her ability to do embroidery and how well she embellished her work.
All materials were usually bought in open markets. The first pattern book was created in Germany in 1524. These patterns were very basic and left the stitcher deciding what colors to use. Aida cloth was first made in 1890, also in Germany.
“Modern” cross stitch began in the 1960’s. It is the most popular form of embroidery today. Due to modern printing techniques, patterns are much more available to people. The introduction of the computer has also allowed people to create their own patterns.
Today, there are two main types of patterns. The first is “No Count”. These patterns have the pattern dyed onto the fabric. This is perfect for children and beginning stitchers. The second pattern type is “Counted”. With these patterns, you start with a piece of blank cross stitch fabric. You use a pattern to count your stitches to put on the fabric. These are great for more advanced stitchers.
Our goal is to “reinvent” cross stitch patterns. "Why must they be so complicated??
Why are some so plain?” Why can’t I just have some fun with it??
Our cross stitch patterns are more light hearted.
Some are funny, some completely demented and inappropriate! Just how demented and inappropriate?? Check this one out! This cross stitch pattern is BY FAR our most vulgar!
To see other demented patterns, check out our section titled
